And one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? James 2:16
New Hanover is opening our doors to the CARITAS men’s group this holiday season. We will be offering love, housing and friendship to a group of about 40 men, who for various reasons find themselves without some of the simplest of basic needs. How fortunate we are that we have an opportunity to serve them during this special time of the year. Having been blessed with this building and the space that it provides, along with lots of loving servants of God, we have been able to devote ourselves to the mission of CARITAS and the people that it serves.
CARITAS is a valuable part of our mission outreach into the community. Homelessness in Richmond is an ongoing problem and it takes so many congregations and groups to provide the much needed shelter, food, clothing and love to these people in need. The CARITAS shelter provides beds to more than one-third of Richmond’s homeless. For more information on CARITAS, please visit http://www.caritasva.org
These men will be joining us December 23-30. Please consider ways in which you can help to make these men feel God’s ever present love. You may ask, “What can I do to help?”
New Hanover will be serving approximately 560 meals and 280 packed lunches during their stay. We need volunteers to help in many ways, such as set up/take down, meal prep and serve, stocking the food and men’s clothing pantry, providing laundry service, supervision of overnight stays, evening programs and much more.
Fellowship with our guests is more rewarding than you could ever imagine, but if you can’t be with us we are grateful for your donations. If you are able to help, a SignUpGenius site will be created soon. Watch the bulletin, weekly emails and Facebook for more information.
Many of you will have family and friends in town during the Christmas season. Bring them along. Think of the memories you will have of your time together, while making a huge difference in the lives of these men. If you have a group or team that you would like to round up to fix and serve a meal, do it now. Together we can make a difference. Questions can be emailed to Stacey at email@example.com or Katrina at firstname.lastname@example.org , or call Graham in the church office at (804) 730-9700.
