A Christmas Blessing

By Rev. Robert Johnson

Oh Lord,

May we
at this time of year
remember that the baby Jesus
of the star, shepherds and manger
did not remain so
but grew into the man
of compassion, cross and empty tomb.

Help us, Lord
that we not find our faith
frozen in Bethlehem
so consumed by the cuteness
of the baby Jesus
that we forget he grew
into the one who dared
to oppose every oppressive power
and to love neighbor as self.

Redeeming God,
remind us always
that the birth of Jesus of Nazareth
was only the promise of deliverance
that became fulfilled
in the fullness of time
in the life, death and resurrection
of the Son of God.
