We Presbyterians don’t traditionally celebrate All Saints Day because our Reformed forebears bristled at the ancient custom of praying to the saints.
However, a true understanding of the saints sees them as all of God’s children-men, women, children together-called to live extraordinary lives in ordinary ways. What we celebrate in these holy women and men isn’t their piety or perfection but the fact that we believe in a God who acts in our lives, calling us to live authentically.
Today’s Gospel message was the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:32-44). Lazarus is an example of how, by listening to Jesus’s command to “Come out!,” we too can live truly authentic lives before God.
