“Straining at gnats and swallowing camels” is one of the most picturesque phrases in scripture. When Jesus used the phrase in Matthew 23, he was enraged that the Pharisees and religious law-interpreters seemed always to be satisfied with obeying the Law in small, personal matters but absolutely uncaring about matters of “justice, mercy and faith.” (Matt. 23:23)
Those are Jesus’ words, not mine.
This week we will be looking at another event that enraged Jesus – when religious people would have preferred that law overrule compassion (see John 5:1-18).
